Why Your Thriving is Your Company’s Greatest Asset

Do you feel the constant tension?
It’s the juggling act of strategic goals, multiple meetings, executive morale, stakeholder expectations, and ever-increasing financial metrics. All of this in a world that never stops.
In the face of these demanding voices, our own well-being often feels like a luxury and a secondary concern—something to be addressed "later." But to keep the professional plates spinning, we often end up sacrificing our physical health and our most important personal relationships.
Is this really what success looks like?
This ever-present tension between thriving in our personal life and excelling as a CEO can grow into an overwhelming reality: something is about to break.
I know only too well from my own past experience that this gradual depletion has an impact on every sphere of life. The decline was subtle at first, but cumulative. Over time, it had a massive impact on my health, my sleep, and the key relationships in my life.
As my vitality drained, my ability to lead transformationally rapidly declined with it. Perhaps most dangerously, when I eventually left that role, my own sense of identity and purpose vanished—because I had unwittingly attached them to the role and position and success. It was a tough road back, and I am deeply grateful for those who supported me on the journey to restored identity, purpose and relationships.
The reality I learned is simple but stark: The way you lead your business is inseparable from the way you lead your life.
If you are not thriving personally, your leadership capacity shrinks, your strategic edge dulls, your presence with your executive team wanes and your relationships become strained.
The result? Your ability to multiply thriving leaders around you diminishes.
Simply put: Leaders who are not thriving personally cannot sustain the culture and performance their organisations need to excel.
Whole Life Leadership
This isn’t about self-indulgence or "balance" in the traditional sense, nor is it simply about working less. (Although that might be a key!)
It is about something far more potent: Whole Life Leadership. This is the integration of personal thriving that overflows into professional excellence to create a foundation for transformational results.
Traditional leadership focuses on strategy, execution, and metrics. These are vital, but there is a fundamental equation that drives sustainable growth: The energy of the leader sets the capacity of the organisation.
When you are personally thriving—living and leading from rest, with strong personal relationships and in good health—you act as a catalyst. You amplify the capabilities of those around you. Your strategic thinking sharpens, your presence inspires confidence, and your resilience becomes contagious.
It is not about choosing between your well-being and your company’s success. It is about realising that they are deeply interconnected.
The Science of Human Thriving
Human thriving isn’t a vague, feel-good concept; it is a measurable state and the essential fuel for optimal functioning.
Harvard’s Human Flourishing Program has established through decades of empirical research that flourishing is not merely the absence of stress or burnout. It is the active presence of five central domains that enable people to thrive and excel:
- Happiness and Life Satisfaction: Overall feelings of contentment, joy, and satisfaction.
- Mental and Physical Health: The holistic well-being of both body and mind.
- Meaning and Purpose: A sense that life is directed toward valued goals and that what we do truly matters.
- Character and Virtue: Living according to ethical, moral, or character strengths such as integrity, kindness, and responsibility.
- Close Social Relationships: The deep connections that provide support and belonging.
Martin Seligman’s PERMA model reinforces this, highlighting that sustained performance requires personal thriving through a foundation of positive emotion, deep engagement, and meaningful relationships.
The Leadership Connection
Decades of research confirm that personal thriving directly translates to professional impact. Leaders who embody these qualities possess the psychological resources required to navigate complexity and drive innovation.
Research consistently shows that CEOs with high emotional regulation and vitality drive better team cohesion, faster conflict resolution, and superior performance outcomes. In short, thriving creates a life worth living—and a leadership style worth following.
Five Pathways to Personal and Professional Thriving
If you want to move from simply managing results to catalyzing growth, here are five focus areas to help you thrive:
- Know Your Identity and Zone of Genius
Great CEOs know who they are at their best. They understand that their value runs far deeper than their role, title, or financial status. When you are secure in yourself—confident yet humble—you are released from the exhausting traps of self-promotion and self-protection. This clarity allows you to prioritise work that aligns with your unique strengths, creating space for "flow." When you operate from your "Zone of Genius," you don't just drive productivity; you deepen your sense of meaning and excel in serving those around you.
- Recommendation: The Wakeman and Wright Leadership Deep Dive is our premier tool for gaining absolute clarity on your identity and genius.
2. Anchor Your Life in Purpose
Purpose is the "why" that powers the "what." CEOs who possess clear clarity on their life’s purpose bring energy, passion, and inspiration to every room they enter. Taking time to rethink and reconnect with your purpose releases fresh motivation and vision, allowing you to excel in delivering sustainable results—even in high-pressure environments.
3. Create Sustainable Rhythms
Physical, emotional, and spiritual health are not just "nice-to-haves"—they are performance multipliers. Small, daily investments in your health—whether through disciplined rest, intentional exercise, reflection, prayer, or unplugged time—pay exponential dividends in your leadership longevity.
- Tool to Explore: We highly recommend implementing the GiANT 5 Gears framework to master the art of being present and productive.
4. Nourish Close Relationships
Strong personal relationships are the bedrock of thriving. When our personal relationships thrive, our health improves, stress reduces, and we are able to excel in our leadership. Take time to consider who the most important relationships are in your life and build a plan to invest in them with consistency. Professional isolation is a dangerous reality for many CEOs, so you must intentionally seek out connection. Whether it is a trusted advisor or peer CEO, you need a space to process complexity and gain fresh perspective to sustain your momentum.
5. Become Others-Focused: Liberate Your Team
It is tempting to think that thriving requires focusing solely on ourselves. While self-care is vital, true thriving must eventually turn outward. When we are secure in who we are, we can operate in our zone of genius and overcome our own tendencies to undermine our influence. We call this the process of Liberation. As we become more fully who we were created to be, we naturally begin to value others around us more highly. We stop relating to them through their behaviour and start relating to them through their identity. We become liberators as we lead for their highest possible good, calibrating support and challenge to enable them to thrive in their identity and purpose. This is the key to multiplying high-performing teams!
A Partnership for Growth
These five focus areas aren’t just abstract ideals—they are the practical disciplines that sustain peak performance over the long haul.
We know from deep personal experience, and from working with hundreds of executives, that when leaders flourish, organisations flourish. But we also know that trying to integrate personal well-being with professional excellence can feel like a lonely pursuit. It doesn’t have to be.
